Mahershala Ali made history last night as he took home the award for Best Supporting Actor at the Oscar’s. The “Moonlight” actor portrays a kind-hearted Miami drug dealer who becomes a father figure to a boy who is struggling with his sexuality.
“I want to thank my teachers, my professors,” Ali said. “One thing that they consistently told me… ‘It’s not about you. It’s about these characters. You are a servant. You’re in service to these stories and these characters.”
The “Moonlight” actor thanked the cast, crew and his wife that gave birth to the couple’s newborn daughter just four days prior to the Oscars ceremony.
“I want to thank her for being such a soldier through this process, and carrying me through it all,” Ali said.
Ali is the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar. This is a monumental success especially at a time where America has become the home of the travel ban instead of the home of the free.
Congratulations Mahershala Ali on making history!
